SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems are in charge of much of the world's critical infrastructure. They have traditionally existed on private networks, and thus, have not had to fear much from attackers. Security is weak in these systems where attacks have the potential to cause large scale disasters, especially now they are moving to the open internet. Our work focuses on taking the research that has already been done in intrusion tolerant systems and applying them towards SCADA in an open source solution.
Specifically, we have spent the semester working with pvbrowser, an open source HMI (Human machine interface) for SCADA systems. We have developed an extension that works alongside the PRIME algorithm to replicate SCADA master servers and allow them to function correctly even if f (out of a total of 3f+1) of the master servers have been compromised by malicious agents.
